he Straight Child Foundation (TSCF) today 12th April, 2025 convened another one of its quarterly Parent Support Group Meeting for parents and guardians of children living with cerebral palsy (CP). The gathering, held in TSCF Umuahia Head office meeting hall, provided a platform for parents to share experiences, voice concerns, and advocate for improved care and support for children with CP.
A key highlight of the meeting was the passionate call by parents for government intervention in establishing a dedicated cerebral palsy centre or school in Abia State. They emphasized the need for a facility that integrates medical, social, and educational services tailored to the unique needs of children with CP.
One of the parents, Mrs. Chijioke, cited the existence of both private and public CP-focused schools and centres in states like Anambra and Lagos, urging the Abia State government and stakeholders to replicate such initiatives locally. According to her, “Children with cerebral palsy in Abia deserve access to the same level of care and support available in other states. A dedicated centre would go a long way in improving their quality of life.”
In anticipation of the upcoming Children’s Day celebration on May 31, parents also enthusiastically contributed ideas for the event’s activities. They emphasized the importance of public involvement and support to ensure the program’s success, highlighting the need to foster an inclusive society where children with disabilities are seen, heard, and celebrated.
The session also featured a presentation by Mrs. Confidence Solomon, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia. She educated parents on the importance of a balanced diet for children with CP, stressing the benefits of fibre-rich foods and those fortified with prebiotics, probiotics, calcium, and essential minerals crucial for growth and health.
A total of 30 parents and 15 children attended the meeting, alongside TSCF staff and volunteers who facilitated the program. The Foundation remains committed to creating safe spaces for families, raising awareness, and advocating for the rights and well-being of children living with disabilities.
