50 Children, 50 New Futures: The Gift of Mobility

What if a birthday celebration could change the course of a child’s life?

As Dr. Peace Amanaegbulam, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and CEO of The Straight Child Foundation, celebrates her 50th birthday, she has chosen to mark the milestone not through gifts for herself, but through a gift for children who need it most.

The result is the 50 Surgeries for 50 Children Campaign.

Across Nigeria, many children live with orthopedic conditions that can be treated successfully but remain unaddressed because their families cannot afford specialist care. Conditions such as clubfoot, limb deformities, fractures, bone infections, and congenital abnormalities can affect a child’s ability to walk, attend school comfortably, interact with other children, and participate fully in everyday life.

For Dr. Peace, this campaign represents something much bigger than a birthday.

“Instead of birthday gifts, I choose to give the gift of mobility.”

Through the initiative, The Straight Child Foundation aims to provide free orthopedic surgeries for 50 children from 50 indigent families.

The surgeries will take place during two outreach programs:

15th – 19th November, 2026 — Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital (GOUNITH), Enugu

30th November – 4th December, 2026 — Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia

Approximately ₦600,000 is required to support each child, covering surgery, implants, anesthesia, medications, hospital stay, and follow-up care.

But the campaign is not only about surgery. It is about giving a child the opportunity to move more freely, return to school, participate in their community, build confidence, and imagine a future without a preventable physical limitation standing in their way.

Individuals, healthcare professionals, organizations, and corporate partners are invited to become part of this mission through sponsorship, medical donations, logistics support, volunteering, advocacy, and partnerships.

For Dr. Peace, turning 50 represents 50 opportunities to create lasting impact.

For 50 children, it could represent the beginning of an entirely new future.
