MiracleFeet Inc is a US-based nonprofit organization that focuses on supporting Ponseti clubfoot care in developing countries. Their support is felt in Clubfoot clinics in about 29 countries: Africa, Asia, Central and South America.
The partnerships between MiracleFeet and The Straight Child Foundation started in July 2018 and has grown from two clinics at inception to 7 clinics in 7 different states of Nigeria. More than 800 children born with Clubfoot have so far benefited from this program.
Then in 2021, MiracleFeet sponsored our application to join the Global Clubfoot Initiative, GCI.
Global Clubfoot Initiative is a not-for-profit collaborative initiative, a consortium of individuals and organizations with technical and organizational expertise in clubfoot management, using the Ponseti method and experience in establishing national clubfoot programs in low- and middle-income countries. This initiative brings together and strengthens the work of organizations around the world involved in the prevention of disability caused by untreated clubfoot.
OUR MEMBERSHIP WITH GCI AND IMPACTS ON CLUBFOOT
Raising Awareness In The Clinical and Academic Domain:
GCI and her members have presented on clubfoot in at least 20 conferences and meetings over the last 5 years to groups including orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, Prosthetists and Orthotics and the disability and birth defects communities. Being part of the Initiative will increase our sphere of influence while offering us broader opportunities for capacity-building in advocacy and service delivery.
EDUCATION:
Building capacity for effective, high quality clubfoot treatment and services through training and education is a huge part of our work and priorities.
ACT:
The Africa Clubfoot Training was developed by a consortium of organisations including Oxford University, Cure International and GCI in 2015 – 2017. GCI contributed to ACT at each stage of development and coordinated input from our members in order to ensure that the final tool could be used by all. ACT has now been rolled out in at least 29 countries worldwide, Nigeria inclusive. At the last count, three members of our team, The Straight Child Foundation, have been trained as trainers using the ACT Curriculum.
CAST:
The Clubfoot Administration System, developed by Miraclefeet in partnership with GCI is a data collection, management and analysis system for use in clubfoot clinics. Users collect data in the clinic on a smartphone and are given feedback both in real time and summary form on their clinic performance. It provides an opportunity for monitoring and evaluation to ensure that quality is maintained.
We are excited at this new membership and look forward to greater productivity and an increased impact in our environment and beyond.
